Daniel came to the USA when he was approximately 19 years old. It is believed that he arrived at NY and then made his way to Chicago. From there he traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska and worked on the Railroad line that ran near McCook, Nebraska. A story is told about how he stayed in a boarding house, and one night he did not show up at dinner. The lady who owned the boarding house enquired as to his whereabouts and one of the other roomers said that Daniel's papers had not arrived so he was not able to receive his pay until they arrived. The kind landlady ordered the young man to go find Daniel and insist that he come to the table. It is said that she told him, "Sit down and eat. You cannot go to work on an empty stomach. There will be be plenty of time for you to pay us after your papers get here."
He worked hard and finally was able to send money home, and this is what helped the rest of the family make it through some difficult times.
He traveled to the World's Fair at Chicago, and it was there that he met his bride, Elizabeth Fahey, also from Co Galway. They were married and the rest, of course, is family history.
Years later, their daughter, Elizabeth, met and married William Heelan, who turned out to be the son of the people who owned the boarding house in Lincoln, who had been so kind to Daniel.
Daniel's uncle, Thomas Lynch, who stories have it, had killed an Englishman and had to leave Ireland quite quickly. He met up with Daniel Egan, and they both homesteaded outside of Hyannis, Nebraska.
