      Robert was an accomplished pilot. The day of his death, some friends suggested that it might be unsafe for him to fly along with the pilot who was operating the plane that day. Robert had joked that he had survived numerous sorties during the war and certainly was not put off by a quick flight for a work-related event. It was his last flight.

      He won the flying cross and air medal with 24 oak leaf clusters.
